“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”1
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given to the Church as the living Spirit that animates and sustains the Body of Christ, thus consecrating its members to follow after Christ in His life and mission of proclaiming the Gospel and consecrating the world to His Heavenly Father. In our reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, we too are anointed and thus consecrated to become more like Christ and to share in His mission of the Gospel, each according to the gifts and talents with which God has graced us. The reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the next stage of growth in the life of faith in which we are empowered by Christ for the work of ministry, of witnessing to the faith, and living it in the joy of the Gospel that comes from God.
