St. Thérèse (of Lisieux) of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, “The Little Flower”, photograph, c. 1888–1896
St. Thérèse is well known for her love of God’s beauty revealed in creation, particularly in flowers. In flowers St. Thérèse saw the wonders of God’s creation played out in so many shapes colors, and scents, all of which spoke to great hidden realities that her childlike soul was able to readily approach and rejoice in whenever they were near. She shared in her autobiography, which she was compelled to write at the order of her superior:
“The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not rob the little violet of its scent nor the daisy of its simple charm. If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, nature would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wildflower. And so it is in the world of souls…Jesus’ garden.”[1]
The Little Flower Ministry draws upon the beauty of creation and brings it to the service of the Altar of God in the arrangement and decoration of the sanctuary throughout the year, helping through their service to allow creation to speak of and praise the wonders of God in their own colors, shapes, and scents. Such flowers serve as a powerful and yet gentle reminder to us of how our lives are meant to be: beautiful, fragrant, and alive in the Presence and Glory of God.
“No other means have I of proving my love than to strew flowers; that is, to let no little sacrifice escape me, not a look, not a word, to avail of the very least actions and do them for Love. I wish to suffer for Love’s sake and for Love’s sake even to rejoice; thus shall I strew flowers.”[2]
